During the night of Saturday the
26th and Sunday the 27th of October 2002, various
earthquakes warned us that Etna was reawakening from
a respite of circa 15 months, based mainly on the
violent paroxysmal activity of the volcano on the
northern slope of Linguaglossa. The entire Piano
Provenzana with its many tourist buildings were
totally covered by the flowing lava and roads were
ripped apart. A section of the ancient RAGABO PINE
GROVE was in flames. This was the result of the
devastating force of Mount Etna, which on this
occasion decided to really scare us…
Starting from PIANO PROVENZANA, you will reach the
craters from which the most important eruptions
occurred over the last few decades on the northern
slope of the volcano. You will cross the flow from
these craters along a path that runs beside the lava
channel, a deep canyon cut by an enormous magma mass
that invaded and partially destroyed the ancient
RAGABO PINE GROVE. From here you will re-enter the
PIANO PROVENZANA.
