To climb to the summit of Mt Etna requires you use a guide: the summit, and its environs are out of bounds to unguided walkers.
Gruppo Guide Enta Nord is based in Linguaglossa (where we were staying for a few days to explore the national park). We, along with a group of ten other folk, had an excellent experience from our two guides: we were given lots of fascinating details about Etna, which the guides delivered in a number of languages (including excellent English).
Upon reaching the summit it became immediately apparent why the summit-area is out of bounds: accidentally wander into a bad location and you would be hit by noxious gas, and even where we were lead it was at times difficult to breath – and your eyes stung from the intense sulphur dioxide in the air!
The summit landscape is truly alien: sulphur stained rocks of bright yellow and orange; steam, smoke and gas venting from the ground all around you, and the sound of the mountain breathing is, to say the least, unnerving…
Without doubt a fabulous, not-to-be-missed, thing to do when holidaying in Sicily. And with Gruppo Guide Enta Nord you are in good hands!
